Santos Tour Down Under
As the biggest cycling event in the southern hemisphere, The Santos Tour Down Under celebrates the opening of the cycling season for 2012, and we will be behind Team Sky the entire way. Held over six days beginning January 17, it attracts the top WorldTour professional cycling teams to compete on the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia.
We will have our eyes glued to Team Sky during this year's Tour Down Under. Last year they had a successful race with Ben "Swifty" Swift winning two stages and finishing third overall.
It is not just a bike race though; it is also a festival of cycling, with a whole host of exciting events during the six-day competition. So join us in getting behind some of the world's top cyclists, and cheer on Team Sky competing on our home soil at one of the most popular cycling events of the year.
Team Sky
This year's squad is 28-men strong, and we are lucky enough to have the following professional cyclists here in Australia for the Santos Tour Down Under:
- Edvald Boasson Hagen (Norway)- Winner of two stages of the 2011 Tour de France
- Geraint Thomas (Great Britain) - White jersey wearer at the Tour de France
- Alex Dowsett (Great Britain) - Current British national time trial champion
- Danny Pate (USA) – One of the hardest working riders in the peloton who helped Mark Cavendish win the green jersey at last year's Tour de France
- Chris Sutton (Australia) – Strong sprinter who has won in stages in the Tour Down Under and the Tour of Spain
- Michael Rogers (Australia) – Triple time trial world champion
Two exciting names signed on with Team Sky not riding in Australia, but for the rest of the cycling season include:
- Mark Cavendish (Great Britain) - 20 career Tour de France stage wins and current world champion
- Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain) - Triple Olympic gold medal winner and fourth in the 2009 Tour de France
